There are many ways to get fuel discounts in New Zealand. The two most common are loyalty programs and dockets that print out at the bottom of your supermarket receipts. Loyalty program discounts come in three types
- Third party loyalty programs like OneCard and FlyBuys
- Gas chain specific loyalty programs
- Restricted or paid membership programs. I have marked these discounts in italics since they are not available for most people.
Fuel is expensive in New Zealand, and since fuel is charged in liters, the discounts can be substantial. The discounts below apply to both diesel and petrol unless noted. There is a considerable difference in price between diesel and petrol at the pump. Most of this difference in price is due to fuel taxes being included in petrol prices and paid separately for diesel fuel. One lite of petrol that costs $2.00 has over $0.95 is taxes between GST and excise tax.
