New Zealand’s Department of Conservation has announced the pricing for Great Walk huts for 2019 to 2020 Great Walk season. The DoC introduced a differential price trial for the 2018/2019 season, and they are rerunning the differential price trial for the 2019/2020 season. Bookings are still required for people under 18, even if there is no. The fees for campsites are per camper, not for the entire campsite. All the fees are for the Great Walk season, outside of the season the fees vary. Our guide to booking a Great Walk hut goes over all the details. Make sure that the schedule is open before you start booking.
Differential Price Trial
The differential price trial is different pricing for New Zealanders and foreign visitors. The two reasons behind the pricing trial are to “reduce visitor pressure” and to raise more revenue for DoC. The Great Walk huts have a $3.8 million annual shortfall, and the additional fees are supposed to raise an additional $2.9 million in revenue. Foreign visitors account for around 60% of Great Walk visitors and a higher percentage of the tracks that they are trialing differential pricing.
